Visiting artist and current ArtPace Contemporary Art resident Adrian Esparza will lecture on “Pattern and Drought” at 11 a.m. Thursday in Room 120 of the visual arts center.
Esparza, a native of El Paso, will address the political, economic and cultural divide he has encountered since his youth. Esparza received a master of fine arts degree from the California Institute of Art in 1998.
Since receiving his degree, he has exhibited throughout the United States and Mexico. Esparza deconstructs commercially cast ceramics, brightly colored serape blankets and tourist shop fabrics, reassembling and reinventing them into new aesthetic objects.
Visual arts Professor Debra Schafter said, “Esparza’s focus on borderland issues has particular significance to all our art appreciation students. This is a great opportunity for our students to see an internationally exhibited artist before he makes his debut to the general public at ArtPace.”
Esparza’s upcoming exhibit at ArtPace is titled “Dreams, Drought, Landscape”and will be on view Nov. 19- Jan. 10.
The lecture is made possible by funding from the office of student life and the student activity fee.
