Chancellor Bruce Leslie has received a no-confidence vote from faculty at four of the five colleges that make up the Alamo Community College District.
More than 90 percent of voting faculty voted no-confidence. Faculty at St. Philip’s College went a step further and voted to ask for his resignation.
With the low morale among faculty and staff at the colleges, it’s surprising that these votes haven’t been called for before now.
When the board hired Leslie in 2006, he was the only finalist. Trustees didn’t bother to give the public a chance to meet several finalists and offer input into the selection.
So they must bear the sole responsibility for his selection.
Almost three years later, the chancellor still enjoys solid support from the trustees.
After scores of faculty from the district’s four accredited colleges appeared at Tuesday’s board meeting to deliver the no-confidence message, trustees responded by voting confidence in the chancellor, approving his new three-year contract and leaving a $30,000 bonus in tact.
Oh, a couple of trustees raised some concerns, but that concern wasn’t enough to change what really matters — their vote.
Do they really want a chancellor who has so much conflict with the faculty?
Faculty are the vital ingredient in students’ success. They care the most about the aspects of college directly related to helping students learn.
Have you ever heard a student or former student speak at commencement about being inspired by district administrators? Trustees?
Trustees, who are elected by voters in Bexar County, should listen to someone outside district headquarters. And that includes faculty and students.
