Three students — Sara Arce, Juan Solis and Amy Yanaway — were awarded scholarships at last night’s Halloween scholarship benefit in McAllister Fine Arts Center.

Music Chair Mary Lou Russell called the student’s names in alphabetical order, and as soon as they made their way on stage, gave some background on the full-time music majors.

Arce, a sophomore, is a first-generation college student and has a grade-point average of 3.7. In addition to her classes, she is a work-study student in the college bookstore and the music department’s librarian.

Solis, also known as “JT,” has studied percussion for three semesters.

Russell announced that although Solis is a sophomore, he plays senior-level pieces.

He also serves as a percussion specialist for John Jay High School.

Yanaway has been a student of this college since 2007 and carries a 4.0 GPA. After graduation, she plans to teach music theory at the college level.

Yanaway also works at L&M Bookstore on North Main Avenue.

Normally, there are only two students awarded scholarships, but revenue from last year’s show allowed a third student to be awarded.

Each student received a $500 scholarship.

The annual show raises scholarship fundsfor the music department for full-time music majors with at GPA of at least a 3.0.

The music department is to get back to The Ranger with an exact attendance number.
