Sixteen acts representing 18 departments and offices took the stage in the auditorium of McAllister Fine Arts Center Thursday night to show that “SAC Has Talent.”
English Instructor Richard Farias and theater and speech communication Instructor Ronnie Watson were emcees of the event, billed as a fundraiser for classroom technology.
Vice President of Academic Affairs Jessica Howard and theater and speech communication Chair Jeff Hunt kicked off the performances with their rendition of “Take Me Out to the Ball Game.” Their revised lyrics, “For it’s one, two, three, four, five, six drops, you’re out,” drew laughter and applause from the crowd.
Astronomy Professor Dave Wood solved a Rubik’s Cube puzzle in less than three minutes to the accompaniment of music Professor Andrew Gignac on trumpet.
David Alvarado, Henry Castillo, Vicente Castillo and Albert Raya, representing the office of admissions and records, played mariachi-band instruments and sang a medley of “Charanga” mixed with contemporary rap songs and dance moves.
President Robert Zeigler got into the act with a walk-on appearance late in the show, followed by what he jokingly referred to as his “posse” of fellow academicians dressed as members of the Village People.
Other acts featured singing, dancing, musical performances and videos.
Winners of the YouTube classroom lecture competition were announced. Receiving SmartPens based on student voting were Hunt, first place; theater and speech communication Instructor Jolinda Ramsey, second place; and paralegal studies Coordinator Tandy Schoolcraft, third place.
In a random drawing of participating departments, winners of digital projectors or comparable technology were kinesiology, professional- technical education and political science.
A silent auction also was held. Attendees bid on gift baskets donated by academic departments and college administrative offices.
