Governor announces $3 million program to fund health careers for vets, military personnel

June 3 at St. Philip’s College, Texas Gov. Rick Perry announced a $3 million workforce development initiative for military personnel and veterans that will affect those studying allied health occupations at district colleges. Students who have served in any of the armed forces will be eligible for college credit for military experience toward degrees in allied health occupations, which are in demand in Texas. Full story

Writing center helps students polish their prose with face-to-face or online tutoring

Face-to-face and online tutoring are available by appointment for any students, faculty and community members who need help with their writing through the writing center in Room 203 of Gonzales Hall.

Choices abound in service learning

English students mentor children in poetry and storytelling.

Service learning is a program in which both the students and the community benefit through learning and active participation. It is usually arranged through higher education institutions, elementary schools, secondary schools and various nonprofit and community service organizations.

It happens to everyone and during the most inconvenient time. Remember the last time you accidentally locked the keys in your car? Or how you felt walking up to your car to find a flat tire. Well, if it happens on campus, have no fear because there is a free service available to all students, faculty and staff that will help unlock cars and fill flat tires.

Textbooks at reserve desk relieves high cost

Borrowing textbooks from the reserve desk on the library’s fourth floor has brought a new life to student wallets. Instead of paying hundreds of dollars for books each semester, students are turning to other resources. The reserve desk has class textbooks reserved by instructors and department chairs so students can read assigned chapters and complete assignments without actually buying the books.

Religious groups feed bodies, souls

Another busy spring semester with lots of obligations, lots of classes and lots of things to worry about is well under way. Students need a break every now and then, so what better way to escape it all than to get involved with one of the religious organizations serving the campus? 

Gym membership with paid tuition

Students who love to work out don’t need to spend extra cash on gym memberships. They already pay for one with their tuition and are entitled to use facilities during free hours in Candler Physical Education Center.

UTSA Connections in transfer center

A new program, which is a collaboration of counselors from this college and the University of Texas-San Antonio at the transfer center, is designed to help students transfer to UTSA and other four-year colleges.

The student learning assistance center, Bailey’s Cyber Café and the English lab are not the only places on campus for students to complete papers and projects.

The early bird won’t have to squirm waiting for a financial aid check to arrive. The office of student financial services will help complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid and Texas Application for State Financial Aid. Although special events are geared toward incoming freshmen, there are specialists willing to help any student.

Speech workshops get students talking

Workshops sponsored by the theater and speech communication department are designed to help students better understand the art of speech and to identify their own style of communication. The department has been hosting the workshops for about five years, speech Instructor Jolinda Ramsey said Friday.

Pay single tuition; enroll in more colleges

Full class? Enroll at another college in the district.

Students can enroll concurrently at more than one of the Alamo Colleges and pay tuition and fees as if they were enrolling in only one of the five colleges.

Communication center offers help

The Strain Communication Center offers students the opportunity to record their oral classroom presentations and allows instant viewing of the recording to help students see the strengths and weaknesses in their performances.
