Northeast Lakeview College closer to accreditation

The Audit, Budget and Finance Committee recommended Northeast Lakeview College's annual financial report for fiscal years 2009-10 and 2010-11 be forwarded to the Alamo Colleges board of trustees for approval. The committee voted 3-1 Tuesday. District 7 trustee Blakely Fernandez voted against the measure. Full story

Counseling center moves to early college building

The counseling center has moved temporarily to the early college building between the chemistry and geology building and Nail Technical Center during renovation of the first floor of Moody Learning Center. David Rodriguez, director of counseling and advising services, said renovation should be completed in July. Full story

Radical district change sparks adjunct representation proposal, professor says

An ad hoc committee of Faculty Senate recommended to the senate Wednesday the addition of two adjunct faculty members with voting rights. Alex Bernal, ad hoc committee chair and English professor, said at special meeting Wednesday the committee will not make a formal proposal until the next Faculty Senate session at 2:15 p.m. Feb. 1 in Room 120 of visual arts. 'Steel Magnolias' glows through thick and thin

A friendship in the middle of a Southern comic beauty shop.

The fine arts department presents the Southern comedy "Steel Magnolias" by Robert Harling for this semester's first show. The play premiered at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the theater of McCreless Hall. Ronald Watson, theater instructor and play director, said he was fascinated by the nature of the story. Full story

Exhibition brings scholarship

A $200 scholarship toward art supplies will be awarded on Friday.

A reception will close the Annual Juried Student Exhibition of the artworks created by visual arts students from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Feb. 10 in the foyer of the visual arts center. At 5 p.m., ceramics Professor Susan Budge will announce the scholarship winner. Full story

Board unaccountable

At the Alamo Colleges board of trustees' Oct. 25 meeting, District 8 trustee Gary Beitzel said, "There seems to be inequity in that it takes more to fire tenured (faculty) than nontenured (faculty.)" District 9 trustee James Rindfuss agreed, stating, "That's the real problem. Full story

DegreeWorks a big waste

DegreeWorks, a degree auditing software integrated with Banner, will be available today to provide academic advising, degree auditing and transfer credit evaluations, according to the Sungard Higher Education website. The software will show coursework needed to complete a degree. Full story

Aspiring professors beware

At a student leadership forum Oct. 27 at Northeast Lakeview College, Chancellor Bruce Leslie told a student aspiring to become a college professor that although the number of adjunct professors is increasing nationally, the student shouldn't worry about finding a job after graduation. Full story

Along with the stress of everyday life, our bodies have to process the foods we eat, which can be difficult if we eat nothing but take-out to accommodate busy schedules. Early lessons pave way to healthy hearts for runners

For the first five weeks of the semester, a student always dressed in shorts, a T-shirt and a pair of cross-trainer running shoes. A classmate wondered, "Is she on the track team?" She's a runner, a sprinter, no — a long distance runner. This college does not have or support a track and field team, but that didn't stop her and her family from heavy-duty running. Full story

Meningitis vaccine in short supply

Students eager to register for classes may have a hurdle. The district website states low cost vaccinations are available for uninsured students through Metro Health and University Health systems. However, both community clinics are out of the discounted meningitis vaccination required for all incoming freshmen, transfer students and students with at least one semester break between courses. One would think the sunny Lone Star state would be a good place to grow tomatoes. However, it is very common to find tomatoes from Mexico, on grocery store shelves along with rice from China and Rumanian lentils. New trends have recently emerged to promote local produce as a way to contribute to a green lifestyle and a local economy. Full story

Gonzales mold gone, but teachers still out

Despite resolving mold and moisture problems in two offices of Gonzales Hall, the previous occupants remain housed in other buildings and the former offices are used as storage space. Continued complaints of poor air quality in Gonzales Hall prompted an indoor air quality investigation in December 2009. Full story
