New lock system in chemistry-geology increases security

The renovated chemistry and geology building is the first building on campus that will require faculty and staff to swipe an ID card to unlock interior doors. The Schlage Control Access System was installed in the building, built in 1961, as it underwent a $7,041,000 renovation, which began in fall 2009. The building, has reopened this semester for classes, although it still is not ready for labs. Full story

The Banner system for student information was temporarily suspended this morning after a midnight purge dropped 2,400 students from classes because of human error. Dr. Thomas Cleary, vice chancellor for planning, performance and information systems, said the IT employee responsible for the mistake was “deeply devastated” over the incident. Full story

Financial aid disbursement changes prompt long lines

“It’s so bad, you could get fired from your job just waiting in line,” psychology freshman Eve Treter said Wednesday as she waited in the long line outside of the financial aid office in Room 101 of Fletcher Administration Center. She was one of many who experienced delays with ACES in receiving a financial aid refund. Treter depends on the financial aid checks for more than just tuition and books; she also needs it to pay her utility bill. Full story

Lines, list of various registration problems long at all the district colleges

Students continue to scramble to the colleges to fix errors in registration after many were incorrectly dropped for nonpayment and others were unable to access the new student services portal, ACES, under the Banner system. Some were dropped because they paid for classes with financial aid and a canceled course affected aid eligibility. Full story

Parking permit

Parking permits expected to be available Sept. 7 in Fletcher

Students can pick up parking permits beginning Sept. 7 in the business office in Room 201 of Fletcher Administration Center. Students can pay in advance at the business office using cash, check or credit card or online through ACES, but they will have to pick them in person at the business office. The cost is $25, a $4 increase from last fall. The Alamo Community College District board of trustees approved the increase March 23. Full story

Taxpayers and students will help Alamo Colleges cope with budget shortfalls by paying higher taxes and tuition as a result of action by the Alamo Community College District board of trustees Thursday evening. Full story

Godin trial postponed to October

The murder trial of Alan Godin, former part-time librarian at Northeast Lakeview College, has been rescheduled for Oct. 4 in the 187th District Court of Judge Raymond Angelini. Almost two years ago, Godin was charged with first-degree murder in the shooting of Northeast Lakeview College Librarian Donald “Devin” Zimmerman. Full story

District's fall headcount more than last year's number

Despite a report by a local TV news crew Aug. 11 that the Alamo Colleges have registered more than 50,000 students, more than this time last year, the actual figures do not bear this out. The district’s computer system Aug. 12 showed greater enrollment than at this time in 2009 although not as great as it appeared district officials reported. Full story

J School Travels across the Gulf Coast

Six members of The Ranger staff and three advisors from the journalism program are traveling along the Gulf Coast from Texas to the Florida Panhandle to report on recent recovery efforts. The team of student journalists is focusing on the aftermath of the April 20 explosion at British Petroleum’s offshore drilling site, Deepwater Horizon, which killed 11 people and caused an oil spill that has surfaced throughout the Gulf affecting hundreds of communities.
